What this place is for

3am.chat is where you talk to a stranger when everyone you know is asleep. Text only. No profiles, no saved history tied to you, no audience. Just two people who both happened to be awake.

The best conversations here feel like sitting in a kitchen at night with someone you just met. The rules below exist to protect that feeling. There aren't many, and most of them are things you already know.

Not allowed here

• Sexual or explicit content, and sexual advances. Asking what someone is wearing, sending explicit messages, or steering a conversation that way after someone changes the subject — one report is enough.
• Harassment, threats, hate. Slurs, telling someone to hurt themselves, or piling on because of who a person is will get you banned, usually permanently.
• Spam, ads, selling or recruiting. If your opening line is a pitch, a promo code, or a "great opportunity," this is the wrong room for it.
• Profile pictures that aren't yours, or aren't safe for a stranger to see. A moderator reviews every photo before it's shown. Nudity, anything explicit, other people's faces, and pictures of minors are rejected — and trying repeatedly ends the session.
• Sharing or asking for contact details and links. Our filters block phone numbers, handles and links automatically — and asking someone to "find you" on another app counts too.
• Impersonating others. Don't claim to be a moderator, a public figure, or some specific real person you're not.
• Being under 18. This is a space for people 18 or older. If we believe you're a minor, you're removed immediately, without a warning.
• Anything illegal. If it would get you in trouble with the law offline, it isn't fine here either.

How reporting works

Tap Report, pick a category — sexual content, harassment, spam, underage, or other — and the conversation closes on the spot. You don't have to keep talking while we sort things out.

The chat log goes to a human moderator, not an algorithm. We aim to review every report within 24 hours. Depending on what we find, the other person gets a warning, a temporary ban, or a permanent one. Serious cases — threats, sexual advances, anyone under 18 — skip the warning.

And you never need a reason to leave. Next drops you into a new conversation. Block means you will never be matched with that person again. Both work at any moment, report or no report.

A note on retaliation

When someone crosses a line, the useful thing is the Report button. Insulting them back feels fair at 3am, but it muddies the log a moderator has to read — and it can make two people look like the problem instead of one.

The same goes for screenshot-and-shame. Posting a chat somewhere to embarrass a stranger turns a bad moment into a public one, and it breaks the quiet that makes this place work. Report it, block them, move on. We'll take it from there.
