About
Built at the hour it's named after
3am.chat is a free, anonymous, text-only chat that pairs you with one other person who happens to be awake too.
How this started
We're a small team, and we kept ending up in the same place: awake at 3am with thoughts that didn't fit anywhere. Too heavy for the group chat. Too small for a post. Too weird to save for morning. What we wanted was old and simple — one other person at the kitchen table, also awake, willing to talk about nothing in particular.
We couldn't find that on the internet, so we built it. That's the whole origin story. No garage, no whiteboard, mostly tea.
What it is
One thing: press a button and get matched with a random live person to talk to, in text, right now. No filters, no browsing — you take whoever's awake, and they take you. A nickname is optional — we'll offer you something like sleepless_fox_42 if you'd rather not think about it. When the conversation ends, it ends. No account, no email, no phone number, no cost.
Why text only
Partly on purpose, partly on principle. Text is calmer. It's easier to be honest when nobody can see your face or your unwashed dishes. It's much easier to keep safe and to moderate. And, frankly, typing quietly in the dark while the kettle cools is the entire aesthetic of this place. No photos, no video, no voice inside a conversation — by design, not as a missing feature. The only picture on the site is an optional profile one, and a moderator sees it before anyone else does.
Why anonymous
We think of privacy as a form of care. At 3am you should be able to think out loud without it following you around. Nothing you say here attaches to a profile, because there is no profile. Morning-you owes night-you nothing.
Why 18+ and moderated
The chat is for people 18 or older, and it has real rules: automatic filters, human moderators, reports reviewed by actual people, and bans for those who ruin it. Anonymity only works when someone is keeping the room decent. The short version lives in our Guidelines.
What we're not going to build
No feeds. No followers. No like counts. No streaks, badges, or nudges engineered to keep you here longer than you want to be. No ad trackers, and nothing about you gets sold — the details are in our Privacy Policy. You talk, and then the site gets out of your way. That's the product. We'd like it to stay that boring.
Who runs this
3am.chat is operated by 3AM Chat. If you want to tell us something — a bug, an idea, a kind word at a strange hour — use the contact form or write to [email protected]. We usually reply within a day or two.
